With respect to automobile manufacturers' specific requirements for suppliers' quality management system and their harmonisation the international working group for the automotive industry completed the requirements of the ISO 9001standard and issued them in an aggregate form as a technical specification IATF 16949. IATF 16949 specifies requirements for the quality management system of
automotive component manufacturers. It includes full requirements of ISO 9001and special requirements for quality management system required by automobile manufacturers.
It is used in certification for an independent assessment of an organisation's capability to meet requirements of the technical specification ISO/TS 16949, customers' requirements, requirements imposed by regulations and own requirements specified for an efficient operation of all processes and for a continual improvement of the quality management system.

The document describes a process-oriented approach to auditing in the automotive industry and gives a catalogue of questions for auditing quality management system according to ISO/TS 16949.
IATF Guidance to ISO/TS 16949
This IATF (International Automotive Task Force) Guidance contains recommended practices, examples, applications and explanations that assist, when used, in meeting requirements of the TS/ISO 16949 standard.
IATF Auditor Guidance to ISO/TS 16949
This manual defines the activities and required qualification of auditor in the process of auditing according to ISO/TS 16949.
VDA Quality management in the automotive industry - Instructions for certification
The document gives:
- basic requirements for a certification body conducting certification activity according to ISO/TS 16949;
- auditing process used for certification according to ISO/TS 16949;
- auditors team;
- additional instructions and annexes needed for the auditing process conducted according to ISO/TS 16949.

ISO/TS 16949:2002Abstract
This Technical Specification, in conjunction with ISO 9001:2000, defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products.
This Technical Specification is applicable to sites of the organization where customer-specified parts, for production and/or service, are manufactured.
Supporting functions, whether on-site or remote (such as design centres, corporate headquarters and distribution centres), form part of the site audit as they support the site, but cannot obtain stand-alone certification to this Technical Specification.
This Technical Specification can be applied throughout the automotive supply chain.
